If you live in Japan, you can get gifts in exchange for making tax-deductible donations to other cities, prefectures, or even causes.

Because the population of Japan is centered so heavily around a few very large cities, smaller areas end up with less money from taxes and therefore have a much smaller governmental fund with which to complete their goals. So the Japanese government created the Furusato Nozei Program, or Hometown Tax Donation Program. Basically, you donate to another city or cause, the amount of your donation (minus 2,000 yen) is exempted from tax, and you get a thank-you gift from the city or cause you donated to. You can donate to as many places as you want (up to a certain limit based on your income, which the website below will help you figure out). It costs 2,000 yen per year (no matter how much you donate) to enter this program.

In 2011, the relief fund for the Tohoku earthquake was one of the most common causes donated to with this program. Each city or prefecture will have their own specific reasons for why they're raising donations. You can search for causes and get more detailed information about the Furusato Nozei program here: https://en.furumaru.jp/

This post is brought to you by the Furusato Nozei program in order to spread awareness about this system! We haven't yet tried it out, so if any of you have experience with it please let us know how it went for you!
